 Artie Shaw's Birthday
Author: hans
Date:   2004-03-31 17:23

Artie Shaw's 94th birthday is in May and I was wondering if others who have been inspired by him and enjoy his work would like to join me in sending him "Happy Birthday" wishes.
If so, please add your wishes to this thread. A week before his birthday, which is on May 23, I'll print the thread and send a card to Artie with the thread enclosed.
Hans

GBK,
I thought that Artie had, to paraphrase someone I know, "divested himself of all remnants of his prior situation" and no longer has any equipment to share. Besides, I would guess that your equipment is far superior to what Artie used ~60 years ago :-) ?
Regards,
Hans

Goodman's "Memories of you" has been one of my favorites and it's true it opened my ears to the sound of this instrument called clarinet (tha's was some 20 years ago)..
I think I listened to Artie Shaw's music nearly around that time.

Could you tell us where he lives now, and any latest news ?

Artie Shaw will turn 94 this May. He lives in Southern California, in the San Fernando Valley (outside of Los Angeles).

There have been a few articles in recent years profiling his past and current life. Here is an excellent one:

Thanks GBK. Artie Shaw is a man with a very interesting past. I wonder how many other entertainers feel the same way about their talent. Its hard to understand that he suffered through those beautiful melodies. Many young people take up the clarinet to some day discover his genious.

From the link above Shaw says:

[ Please don't re-quote something that is so easily available. Instead:

In the link given by GBK, read Shaw's response to the question "During the '30s, you and Benny Goodman were America's dueling "Kings of Swing." What are your thoughts on Goodman?"

Mark C. ]

I wonder: is he bitter, truthful, both, something else? I kind of feel sad for him that he still carries these feelings with him so late into life (I don't say that in any demeaning way).

I don't think anyone needs to feel sad for Artie. My take on his BG comments are that they are simply matter of fact with no special personal feelings pro or con.
