I've been using traditional Van Doren #3 reeds with a 5RVlyre13 mouthpiece, and I wonder if the more expensive Van Doren V12 or Rue 56 reeds are worth trying. They are said to be both thicker and softer, which seems paradoxical to me. I wouldn't mind reeds being a teeny bit softer as long as I can still play high notes, but traditional 2.5 are mostly too soft and I think 3.5 are mostly too hard for me. Can anyone advise?

Until recently I used the same mouthpiece as you, with VD trad #3s. Like you, I can't get on with 3.5s; I can play high notes OK on the 2.5s but find the tuning too wild.
I have also played V12 #3.5s: my experience is that they give a creamier sound than the trads, but are more difficult to articulate clearly. I haven't tried the 56's.
V12 are indeed visibly thicker than trads. They are also softer. There's no paradox here: it is simply that the numbering schemes aren't consistent. You might have expected VD to number them so that a #3 feels equally hard in both types of reed, but they don't. Instead they number them such that a trad #3 feels like a V12 #3.5.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

OF course. Try many different kinds. Will cost a bit but worth it when you find the right one. Also the same kind of reeds may have differences.

I just used a reed modified using the Ridenour ATG finishing system and I cannot believe how good it sounds.
I will have to contact Mr. Ridenour and ask him what brand/strength this is because it's not anywhere on the reed itself. He sent them with the clarinet - they sound great.
