Hi all,
I am interested in what brand /strength reed, players use on "their" Hite "D" mouthpiece. I am aware of the reed recomendations on the Hite site and am just curious as to what players actually use (personal preference).

When I was in middle school I used a Hite D with Mitchell Lurie #3.5 reeds. I sometimes still use it with V12 3.5s (I usually play an M15 currently).

I like both Grand Concert Select and Thick No 3 with my Hite "D".

Currently I am using 2 Hite D mouthpieces, one of which is particularly nice. One observation I have is the response of these mouthpieces is much closer to the Chedeville I own over the Kaspar mouthpieces. They require a somewhat stronger reed with good vibration aspects fairly low down towards the baffle centre. I also think the interior design is more towards the Chedeville and therefore gives a nice ping to the sound.
In orchestra I am having no problems whatsoever with projection and dynamics with a 3 1/2 or 4 V12 reed or even No. 4 Zonda reeds. I think a reed knife could be counted on to give the reeds that extra responsiveness you are looking for.
My teacher in the Boston Symphony Harold Wright always advised with any facing like a Chedeville is to make sure the reed is quick to respond and not too soft. As for younger players I certainly don't advise using too strong a reed no matter the facing.
Some thought should be give to getting a good ligature. This also can make many more reeds play so this can a problem area....

My daughter uses a Vandoren Optimum with the 3 plates. She uses the #1 plate which simulates the Bonade style. plate #2 simulates a Hite and plate #3 a Harrison. Do you think she should use the #3 plate to enhance response?

Dear Mark: Personally I use the Rovner Dark which I feel gives a bit of control to the sound. It might also be better to use the Harrison setting, but I have had quite a bit of trouble getting the Vandoren Optimum to work very well.

My daughter had trouble with hers in the beginning. But I found out that she was tightening the ligature too much and crushing the life out of the reed. It is easy to do, especially with that large knob on it, and of course metal ligatures and not very forgiving in this respect. Once I got her to back off a little everything went well. I just explained to her that ligatures started as a piece of string, and how tight could you possibly get that, with stretch and all. One other problem is that you have to be careful centering the plate over the reed, there is quite a bit of latitude here.

I have just selected a Hite D recently, and I am using slightly clipped V12 4's and slightly shaven 4.5's. According to a mouthpiece comparison chart, the Hite D had an opening of 1.14mm and a facing length of about 36mm. I am curious because when I tried some M13 Lyres (and I quite liked one of them, and am waiting on some more) i needed to use V12 4's from memory. However according to the mouthpiece chat ( http://www.intlmusicalsuppliers.com/pdf/WWCLARMC.PDF ) the M13Lyre is quite a bit more closed than the Hite D. Does this seem unusual to anyone else? Maybe the reeds I am playing on the Hite D are too hard?

I actually chatted briefly about this topic with Mr. Hite about two years ago. He indicated that the "D" series mouthpiece worked best with Vandoren reeds. As I recall, he would not recommend anything but Vandoren.
The Vandoren reeds recommended on the Hite web site work very well.
Personally, I found the Rico Grand Concert Select Thick Blank #3.5 or #4 worked best for me.

I read somewhere in the BB that the Hite D was around 1.14 mm, and this for the tip. I am afraid it is closer than that...its about 1.10 or so and certainly not above that mark which was done with about 3 facings I have of his pieces...as to the reed relationship I have no trouble working with 3 1.2 and 4 Vandoren Grey box.
The M13 lyre is a bit more closed and requires a harder reed of course.
