I heard that letting reeds age is good for them. About how long is good? Any special conditions?

I have a book written by a Japanese clarinettist. His method is like this.

1. Longer aging the better. At least 3 months. 6 months minimum is necessary to see satisfactory results. Effect is they play far longer than new ones. Some people age 7 years up to 20 years! Even aging 3 months will let them play far longer.(He writes.)

2. After buying boxes open them and put opened boxes in a airy box such as mesh jig bag(I use a bamboo mesh box).
Vandoren's reeds are inserted with plastic savers. These are good to keep them straight during aging.

3.Put the mesh bag or box at a place near ceiling. That place is the driest place. If put on floor, they get mildew.

I am now testing this method for two months.

A thought about inconsistent reeds and aging. I happened to run across a great deal on Zonda reeds over the summer. I bought a few boxes, and tryed them...

Hated every reed in the box. So I put them back and left them until this fall, about a month ago.

When I decided to see if I could work any of the reeds to make them work. Why let them go to the trash without a fight. They worked without any adjusting!!!

I still don't like the brand since they go soft during even only a one hour rehearsal, but at least they work for my shorter moments that I get in the day.

Kimberly,
Why not trying Alexander Superial Classic? It is made of genuine French Var cane and designed after MORRE like Vandoren V12. The undersurface is diamond cut, whereas other reeds only diamond cut only on the tip. Expensive but incredibly durable. I think this brand will not last long since the Owner does not considet to keep this business as Family one.
