any community bands in the Richmond Virginia area? We're moving there later this summer.
edited to add: Never mind, I answered my own question. I found a link to several in that area. But let me add a second question:
Do any of y'all have any experience playing in any of the Richmond area community bands? What their temperments are like? Ideally, I'd like to find one that would accept me, a enthusiastic bass clarinetist and reluctant soprano clarinetist and my two boys, one plays french horn and the other plays baritone saxaphone and when pressed alto saxaphone.
Thanks again - beth

What part of of the area are you moving to, Beth? (if you're not sure, then just tell me what school your kids will go to) There are quite a few groups. I believe that five of them would take both you and your children.
The primary groups that would not be interested in children would be the Richmond Pops Band, Richmond Symphonic Winds, and the European Wind Ensemble.
A good way to get a look at the bands is to attend Musical Mondays at Maymont. During the summer, there are band concerts around 6:00pm on Mondays at Maymont Park, all featuring local community bands. There is probably something about it on the Richmond Concert Band website, www.rcband.org.
I have played with the Pops, the Chesterfield Community Band and the European Wind Ensemble for some years, and have friends in the Richmond Concert Band and the Varina Community Band. I would classify these groups as very friendly.
Bands not taking children would be the Richmond Pops, Symphonic Winds (although some outstanding high schoolers participate) and the European Wind Ensemble.
You'll find plenty plenty to do here with your horn--I can promise you that!
If you have further questions, feel free to drop me an email.
