Maybe a silly question to some. Are Ab reeds smaller than Eb reeds? Or do they share the same mouthpiece?

Its' been 35 yrs since I played the Ab clarinet on tour with my college band, but as I remember, the Ab mouthpiece is smaller than the Eb and uses a smaller reed (to be "politically correct). However,"back then", during my "devil may care" college days, I just cut a Bb reed to fit the small mpc and wailed away on the Clarinet Polka for 15 high school concerts around the state. If I had to do it now, I would definately try to use an Eb reed--specifically a Legere #3. Those little Ab's are a "hoot" to play--good luck and let us know if the effer reed works.

Yes, Ab reeds and mouthpieces are smaller than Eb reeds/mouthpieces.

Vandoren make reeds specially for the Ab clrinet if you don't fancy cutting them down from Eb or Bb ones.

i have always used Bb reeds for my Eb clarinet, so i don't see why an Eb reed wouldn't work for and Ab clarinet
[in the year 2000] when it is discovered that it takes exactly 437 licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop, it will be announced that science is officially over.
