I need some opinions on choosing both a stand for my Selmer and a sheet music stand. I see that in Clarinet stands there is a range from portable to nice looking wood jobs. I don't want something that might take a dive, help! Now to the music stands, anybody own the Petersen stand? I'm open to any other suggestions. Oh, I sent in my first large order to the doctor, I feel better already. Happy New Year, Fred

I've been told that the blayman clarinet stand is very sturdy. It's heavy, but that helps to keep it from being easily knocked over. I'm buying one.

If you are talking about something for around the house, I got a table saw and 3/4 plywood sheet and cut 1 foot square pieces.
I then went down to the building supply store and bought some sticks of dowel stick. Drill holes in the plywood and stick 4 or 5 inch pieces of dowel in it. Should be tight fit. Take a knife and bevel the top part of the dowel and use electrical tape to wrap the end of the dowel.
Get some Elmers Glue and glue the dowels on both sides. then paint it. I used round cork coasters bought at a Hobby Lobby for the base.

I have seen more than a few flutes, oboes and clarinets get accidentally knocked over while on their stands.
I have never seen one on a Blayman stand ever go over.
Pretty cheap insurance, worth every penny...GBK

Like Bobd I have the one that folds and stores in the bell. I must admit it toppling over concerns me alittle bit but just the fact that I can take it to concerts easily pays for itself !, I just am alittle more careful around the house as to were I set it.

I have two stands; one for use at home, and one on the stage.
At home, I use a laboratory stand, cut down to roughly 8 inches.
I wrapped the aluminum 'peg' with Plumber's tape.
On stage, I use the K&M 15222 - with the threaded leg assembly.
Between acts, disassemble your horn, or take it with you... no stand is safe unattended.

GBK, I did my homework and you are correct...Blayman looks like the best out there. Reminds me of tripods for cameras, why would ya put a $5,000 camera on a $20.00 stand? I still need to know about this Petersen music stand...or any other, anyone? Happy New Year! Fred

I have a Petersen stand, it's pretty neat. The whole thing folds up into the actual part that holds the music. You can also buy an extender, which makes it the same height as a Manhasset. I use mine at home to practice, and to any outdoor concerts. It has extenders on the sides, so you can put more music on it, which I really like. It's very stable, and it looks nice.

Go with GBK and the Blayman, virtually topple proof & has rubber lined pegs. Consider even the larger 5" x 8" with 3 pre threaded holes. You can get a regular clarinet peg and perhaps an eefer peg for use with an eefer or C clarinet.
You might consider ordering it thru Weiner as over $40 is free shipping. (not a 'plug', Mark, just economic info).
Heavy/broader base is better. (even the smaller round ones of another brand with a steel base are unstable on a carpeted floor)
I was looking across the group and the oboist was warming up. A woman passed by and her skirt brushed the occuppied stand.............I watched, in slow motion, a Loree English horn take a 'dive'. Ouch.
Look at it's cost as a Capital Expense and spend the extra $$

My sturdy clarinet stand with the heavy metal base and the wooden post broke when it slipped out of my hand and fell in the Univ.of Toronto lobby. It was a little hard to share one with my ensemble neighbor! Then I purchased a sturdy plastic one that separates into two interlocking pieces that is light, and easily carried in my clarinet travel bag. It's base is wide enough when assembled so it doesn't get knocked over. IF the other one gets repaired it'll be for home use only.
By the way, for those who have those metal based stands for clarinet and flute - ever notice that the clarinet bell gets stuck on the wide bottom of the post? I solved that problem by sewing a tapered sleeve out of black felt material and securing the felt at the bottom of the post. The clarinet pulls right off without sticking.

I also have a Blayman stand. It's a great stand but very heavy (which is why it's so good). I have the base that measures about 8 inches by 5 inches (there's room for 3 pegs - I have 2 clarinet pegs on it with room for another). It weighs about 6 pounds in all. Great for local work but you wouldn't want to travel with it. I believe you can get a base that is about half as big that fits just two clarinets (which would obviously be at least a couple of lbs. lighter).

The 5x8 Blayman base holds 1, 2, or 3 clarinets.
The octagonal base (the originals were previously round) holds up to 4 clarinets ...GBK

Leaving your horn on any stand onstage is not, in my opinion, a good idea. Accidents do happen and any
clarinet-on-stand can be knocked over. The stand is merely a convenience during non-playing periods. It's your decision.

This is correct, if not altered. I had two more holes drilled in my Blayman so it now holds pegs for not only my A & Bb sopranos, but also my C and my effer, all at the same time! I carry it fully assembled from gig to home in a small accessories duffle. Best stand on the market!!
(FYI--basically, a hole in each corner)

I was surprised, when I went a while ago to see Paquito D'Rivera in concert, that he left during intermission and left his beautiful rosewood Rossi sitting there on the edge of the stage. Not even in the middle at least away from the audience. Right there on the edge! I had to stare at it in awe for a few minutes until my girlfriend finally dragged me away from it. I mean . . . I could have touched it . . . of course I'd immediately be thrown out and/or arrested for some reason . . . but I could have . . . . . . .

Very clever! I never thought to have that done. It certainly would be easier than bringing two 5x5 stands along when playing Bb, A, Eb and C clarinets...GBK

I've been trying to make a stand. The Blayman stands are soooo much money. So far, I spent $15 dollars on the materials and now all I need to do is put it together. If its good I'll make more and sell 'em for cheap ;-)
