 cleaning a bass clarinet
Author: clarinet713

Hello all, Merry Christmas!

I am borrowing a bass clarinet from someone and would like to clean it up (there is black fuzzy mold in the bell!!). Does anyone have any advice on how to do this without harming the instrument?

By the way, yesterday was the first day of bass clarinet for me and I love it!! (except those annoying squaks you get sometimes, but I am working on that:))

Thank you in advance

Dish soap, warm water and two drops of bleach for ten minutes.

Rinse out and dry thoroughly with paper towels.

I've had pretty good success with Simple Green, a cleaning agent you can purchase at most home improvement outlets and supermarkets. Take the key off, saturate a soft washcloth with Simple Green and scrub the metal bell inside and out. Polish with a dry, soft, clean cloth and put the key back on. You can do the same with the neck too if it's, more than likely, yucky.

Simple Green is an excellent detergent.

Do you use it straight, or diluted?

I wear gloves when using that stuff... it is VERY astringent on my skin.

I use it straight for dipping parts before polishing them. It can be diluted too and is still pretty strong at about 50% (water). Thanks for the reminder about gloves, Synonymous. Gloves are always recommended when using cleaners and chemicals - always. I like the latex kind you find at many paint departments.
