Your [alternating] order is interesting also, CPW. I liked playing Bizet's L' Arlesienne Suites, Morning Noon and Night in Vienna, Send in the Clowns, in concert band arrgmts. Don

Anything at all really! As long as the other blokes in the band swing!

With one exception - "Tie Me kangaroo Down Sport" written by fellow Aussie, Rolf Harris.

This tune with deplorably banal lyrics, philistine melody line and recorded by Mr Harris accompanying his own vocal effort on a "wobble board" is one of the most irritating ditties I have ever come across. It concerns a dying drover who is entrusting his possessions to a fellow stockman [stockperson?!] and specifically wants his kangaroo immobilised so it won't escape. A "sport" in Oz parlance is a sort of a "buddy" in US language. It must have made him a packet of dough though, as he can afford to live in London. Why am I going on about this I wonder...............!!@@%%^.

Basically though, anything done with taste can be very satisfying to play, with just the odd exception here and there.

In no particular order ... but these are my desert island handful (note there is no clarinet music here - from sheer perversity)

Dvorak - Dimitrij (opera)
Nielsen - Symphony No. 4 Det Uudslukelige (The Inextinguishable)
Beethoven - "Hammerklavier" Sonata - the B flat major one, that is
Ravel - Daphnis et Chloe (complete ballet)
Brahms - Symphony No. 3

Wow , I agree with every one, lots of goodies out there. Earlier our Tulsa Comm. Band struggled [but succeeded] in giving several performances of L'Arlesienne Suite #1 [one of my favs], now our cond. wishes us to play the Farandole from Suite #2. We have the score [the G. Iasilli arrmgt], but no parts, so I again am searching for a source, HELP, please. Ken K, we are improving on the Der RosenKavalier, but it is TOUGH, to do it well!! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

'Here's that rainy day" - Jimmy Van Heusen

Anything Stamitz...

I can muddle through most of these pieces, and they're simple enough that some of the phrases (let alone notes) sound good!

For me, playing mostly in small combos, it doesn't really matter what I play. I can enjoy anything, except Golden Slippers, if I'm playing with other people who are all listening to each other (me listening, as well, of course), so we're all supporting each other. We do a lot of stuff from fake books, where you've got to make up harmonies, countermelodies, etc, yourself, and know when just to drop out. The better we all can do that the better we all sound and the more fun we have. Except Golden Slippers.

Haven't played much, but so far I've really enjoyed the Four Scottish Dances by Malcolm Arnold, specifically Movement II. Certainly not a favorite, but I suppose it was amusing to play That's the Way I Like It in this year's Labor Day parade.

Ferneyhough, La Chute d´Icare
W.O. Smith, Variants for Clarinet alone
Boulez, Domaines
Isang Yun, Riul (Version for cl)
Elliot Carter, Esprit rude/Esprit doux

None of this is "feelgood" music, I am afraid, but it feels incomparably good playing them, those pieces are what it should be like, making music.

TKS, BobD, just re-read the thread! I recall the L'Arles first from Mich St . Concert Band 1938, as a high school senior needed to help balance out the brass!, then our local symp orch, I played that beaustful alto sax solo etc [Intermezzo?], recently our Tulsa band on B C, with that challenging [cello?] part. Fully as good as Carmen, IMHO! Am also looking for De Fledermaus Waltzes, great music. Don

Ride by Sam Hazo
Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed
Dance of the Jesters by Tchaikovski
Elfin Thuderbolt by Nancy Galbraith

All of these have been performed by me in the last year, and they are some of the most enjoyable pieces of music to listen to or to play. I could keep going, but these are the absolute top.

again... for piano...

Moonlight Sonata (always a big hit)
Tchaikovsky's June:Barcarolle (The only one of the months I've played, but any of the others such as: Jan., Feb., March, April, May, July, August, Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.... They're also good!)
Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach's Solfeggetio
Debussy's 1st Arabesque (although I attempted and couldn't pair triplets with eighth notes)
Chopin's Revolutionary Etude! (The one I'm currently working on)

Basically anything by Chopin! Of course, this is for piano. DON'T DISCRIMINATE AGAINST PIANIST/CLARINETISTS!

Oh, and the reason there are more hits on "Piece you never want to see again", is because people in general think more negatively than they do positively. It must be extremely hard to be optomistic all the time, because it's alot easier to be pessimistic.

Symphony No. 6 for Band - Persichetti
My Jesus! Oh What Anguish - Bach/Reed
La Fiesta Mexicana - H. O. Reed

Anything with a bass or alto clarinet solo!

Re: pieces you love to play

Because the bass clarinet gets to play the melody or countermelody for a large part of the piece:

- Fairest of the Fair by Sousa
- The American Dream (from "Night Visions") by James Beckel, principal trombonist for the Indianapolis Symphony (The Indiana Wind Symphony has it programmed for our next concert and apparently Mr. Beckel will be in attendance.)

and anything else where the bass clarinet has an important role.

To the Aussie who mentioned "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport", I haven't heard that tune for forty years, but as a kid it was one of my favorites here in the U.S. One of my childhood memories was playing it on the jukebox in a diner while eating breakfast. I only remember a couple of verses and occasionally find myself singing or humming it.

"Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred,
Tan me hide when I'm dead.
So we tanned his hide when he died, Clyde,
And that's it hanging on the shed."

and I love to play Adagio from the Clarinet Conerto by Mozart (it has helped me a lot to produce an overall clear tone in all registers).

oh I love summertime! I love just playing along to this CD (without the solo line)...I always stand up and play it for memory and jazz it up. It makes me feel at peace with music and my playing. it's like my zen. I never play it in front of people, but my mom gets compliments from the neighbors about the "wonderful clarinet playing" coming from the house.

I also like Weber's Concerto in F minor, 3rd movement...it's my theme song of the year since I have played it for most of my auditions this year (I usually mix it up more..I did play Concertino and mozart's clarinet concerto and some krommer piece and Brahms, but I have played this the most)
