Something that I have noticed when I am playing and listening to music, is that while I can listen to clarinettists with vastly different sounds and still think they sound good, if my sound differs too much from my ideal sound I get annoyed even if I would enjoy listening to someone else with the same tone. What are other peoples experiences with this type of thing?

lol. Read the post about acker bilk! That'll answer your question as to what others think.
I think on a few different levels. On one hand, I may not like they're tone, but then I try to see if I can appreciate their technical expertise and their expressions of music.
If I like the tone, I may not like the interpretation of the music. One thing that comes to mind is Weber's Concerto #1 performed by Andrew Neville (I believe it's andrew) and The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (forgive me cause I'm going from memory and don't memorize names of things well). I love his tone. And his fingers CERTAINLY know what they're doing, as well as his articulation, but I really REALLY didn't care for his interpretation of the pieces and his tempos and added turns everywhere.
Then there's a recording I have of Weber's Quintet with the Berlin Octet (Album is Best of Weber, disc 2) I think it's Herbert Stahr. I think his tone is excellent, his interpretation is phenominal, articulation great, but he (if he indeed is the one playing) leaks air like crazy when he plays out (forte). And it's distracting. Especially in that small quintent (as oppossed to a large quintet?)
I could sit here and pick apart each and every recording I've ever heard, but instead I listen to them all and focus on the good stuff. Telling myself, "One day I want to have this one's expression, and this one's technique, and this one's tone, and this one's articulation, etc. etc." So, right now, I don't have a single clarinetist that I admire and emulate, but out of the ones I've heard I want to be a little like each, in different ways.
Maybe you should try focusing on other stuff besides tone and maybe you'll like those recordings a little more.

I am usually a LOT more tolerant of tone on recordings that other aspects of playing. If someone has a less-than"perfect" tone I can enjoy it, but if I don't like the interpretation it just grates on my nerves.

sfalexi, the weber f minor recording you are talking about is clarinetist Andrew Marriner (whom i believe is the principle of the london symphony) with Sir Neville Marriner conducting the St. Martin-in-the-Fields. That recording is actually one of my personal favorites, and I really loved his fast paced 3rd movement. And I don't believe he added any turns, but his playing was straight from the paper. However, several editions of the weber f minor exist, and there are places in the 1st movement that differs.
Back to Rachel's question "More tolerant of other peoples sound?", I think that's definately true in my case.
