Barrel Extension

I also got in a copy of Pee Wee Russel's Clarinet Strut. On the picture it appears he has what looks like an extention to his barrel? Is there such a thing? And if so, what is it's purpose?

I should have said a "bell extension." Like a trumpet mute that's put into the end.
