 Aural Transcription

Howdy!
Since it's just about time for the Xmas break here, I was hoping to keep my aural skill up by doing some transcriptions like I've been doing in class all year - usually Bach 2-Part inventions, or 4-part chorales (where we have to identify chords as well!).
Does anyone know of any good sites to download 2, 3, or 4 part MIDI files of Fugues, Inventions etc... Anything! Preferrably VERY tonal, and preferrably Bach or similar.
I did a couple of the Bach Inventions tonight, and I find I can generally get the whole thing correct in about 30 mins or less (about 32 bars). Something a little more challenging would be great.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Another suggestion. Try to play along with your instrument, or instruments, as well as mechanical transcription. It improves your ear no end and helps with fluency. I would prefer to use organic recordings tha midi files, too sanitised.

CPW
Here in Australia our academic years coincide with the actual years. So we START in Feb and finish mid-November. The Xmas break is the break we get between the academic year as well as the actual year! Maybe I could have put it better, but I just got out of bed... Ok Jeanjean I'm coming! Wait up Klose!

What exactly do you mean by aural transcription ... ?

I'm thinking you play the piece of music (on your CD or HiFi) and then write it out?

You want a challenge - try any of the 48 preludes (I'd give the fugues a miss unless you've got exceptional talent).

Actually - Prelude 1 from Book 1 - is delightful.

Do a google search on "Bach midi"

Alternatively, I have a nearly-atonal solo clarinet piece I've just written, if you'd care to have a listen ;)

The Sistine Chapel Choir had a Misere by Allegri that they performed only twice a year during the Tenebrae services at Easter. It was forbidden to see the music or perform the music elsewhere. At age 12, Mozart visited the chapel and wrote down the music from memory afterward, or so the legend goes. See http://www.classical.net/music/comp.lst/works/allegri/miserere.html.

So we all have a ways to go.

Mozart, from what I remember in studying this event, actually visited the Chapel on a coupe of occasions and then wrote it from memory, with only 2 or 3 minor errors. Considering the repetitive nature of the Allegri work, an astonishing achievement.

I figure if it's already a MIDI you've got it made - the music notation programs will import MIDI and give you a score right away.

I have been interested in certain jazz arrangements from Gerry Mulligan groups which use several saxophones, Bill Holman's in particular. The tempos are pretty hot, and I feel it's important to get those woven voices right for the harmonic effect. After many brain-busting sessions I finally sent off $40 for a transcription program that has helped greatly. The music must be made into an mp3, which can then be played on pitch at any tempo. Any section can be displayed as a sound spectrum over a keyboard, so you can check note pitches if there is not a cacaphony of simultaneous tones. However I don't use the spectrum analysis at all - it's mostly just looping the difficult bits at reduced tempo. My notation program runs in another window, so I can enter the notes immediately upon hearing them, and play them back for confirmation.

I realize LeWhite said "aural", not "computer", and that he or she is interested in the challenge, not just the music. With this material the process is still very demanding of my ears even with these tools to speed me along. But for 2-part inventions, fugues etc. it's not worth the bother.

I don't know if I'm not supposed to mention brand names here, but a web search will turn up notation programs that import MIDI for <$100, and free Windows software for slowing mp3's. I know of no free transcription software for the Mac, but my $40 program seems well worth the price.

MIDI is actually good, beacuse I can open it in a notation program to check if I am correct.
