RH low E comes and goes
Author: Ralph G

(Sorry if addressed before -- searching "low E" returns way too many unreleated posts)

I was practicing E major scales on my R-13, starting out on RH low E. Everything was fine on the way up to altissimo E, but on the way back down the RH low E wouldn't come out about 3 times out of 4. LH E works fine, and best I can tell I'm not nudging open any other keys when using the RH key.

I tried the same thing on my Signet and everything worked perfectly each time.

The Buffet does have very slight play in the lower keys, while the Signet is in very good adjustment.

Is there anything I should check?h

Just get in to your repair person for an adjustment. Most likely, the alignment in these lower keys is slightly out. Although some may recommend starting to bend things yourself, or seat pads, it is best to have someone do it who know their stuff. This part of the mechanism can go out relatively easily and it can be tough to get it all just right. There is also the possibility that some other things may not be completely sealing. Remember that if everything throughout the instrument is closed to play that note, so other pads may affect it. Good luck.

If you are in a rush, try slipping a piece of tape on the bottom of the RH E/B key where it depresses the "crow's foot". Depending on how far out of adjustment things are, it may take more than one layer of tape. Your repair tech will be able fix this in a more durable manner.

This is not an obvious adjustment, if it's your first time around.

You'll be miles ahead if you pay the bench time, at your repair shop.
(Not that you won't eventually sort it out, it's just tricky the first few times.)
