Hi, I am new to this board.

I have been playing the saxophone for 8 years and have decided to take the clarinet more seriously. The clarinet is not exactly new to me but previously I had been playing on the Buffet stock mouthpieces and found that the tone was too soft.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good Bb clarinet mouthpiece that is freeblowing (easy to play) and has a nice projective tone. Something that is acceptable in both symphonic and big bands.

Thanks in advance!

Oh thats easy. You will get a lot of answers here but the obvious standard is the mighty Hite Premiere. Its cheap, hand crafted, and easily found in many shops. I am a sax player who learned on this mouthpiece. It has medium resistance and makes a great piece for developing your tone. Its cheap enough that you can get a more expensive specialized piece after you develop your tone. However, a hite premiere would certainly work in the long haul as well.

That's a good choice, and should be readily available.

I would match the Hite with a Legere synthetic reed, if doubling.

<www.muncywinds.com> should be able to supply both.

OF course I say you should get or at least try a Selmer HS**. IF its too open try a HS*. I think they sound the best and play very nice.

Selmer HS** and HS*?
Are these the equivalent of the Selmer C** and C* on saxophone?

Actually the HS* and HS** are quite different. The HS* is quite close and the HS** very open.

I thought I posted a reply to this.
Namely, I'd talk to someone who plays clarinet (well); and ask what they enjoy playing on. If you're playing a double, and seriously considering playing the clarinet and playing it well, I'd make sure you get a good MP to start out with. Stay -away- from Vito or Bundy MPs.. they're evil. *nods to self* Vandoren and Selmer make good mouthpieces to start out on, (I'm still playing on my B45, looking to switch to maybe a B44 or a 5RV Lyre.)

Hope that helps a bit; I don't know all that much about MPs.
-Jenne.

Hey Tubby
Have you given consideration to crystal? Pomarico has a great bunch of crystals from close to open and they play beautifully. I use their Diamond plus. It's an open MPC and has great sound, intonation and is easy to blow. They're also relatively cheap. $65 or so. They never warp or change shape....UNLESS you drop them on the floor! Worth looking into.

Try the C85 series Selmers, they are easy blowing with plenty of volume. They differ from the standard Selmers in facing length.

Well maybe it's just me, but my pomarico diamond and emerald have extreme resistance! I've been thinking about getting them refaced, but just make sure you try them out before you buy them!
