 Method Book for Bass Clarinet
Author: allencole

I have a high school freshman who is very good on bass clarinet, but who does not have a clarinet of his own. I'd like to find a method book that would be reasonable in its demands on the instrument's range. Does anyone here work with a student purely on bass clarinet?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If nothing else, I'll start him in Accent on Achievement book 3, and Tunes for Bass Clarinet Technic.

Allen,
First let me preface this by saying that I have zero experience teaching music and didn't get much formal training myself when I was growing up --- but having said that, why can't your student just play standard soprano clarinet music? I can't see anything wrong with having a bass clarinet student learning to play comfortably in the upper register; this might avoid the 'fear of flying' so many bass clarinetists seem to have --- he'll get PLENTY of time 'down low' playing band literature. For the few years I took lessons and played the high school solo festivals it was always soprano clarinet music I had to play on the bass, and I attribute my current ability to play up high with that early training (and a well-regulated instrument doesn't hurt either....). This may not answer your question, but hopefully will provide some food for thought.

In this case, I'm not so sure about a well-regulated instrument. He has very good range on a Bundy with the single vent, but certain of his high notes are understandably stuffy.

In college, this issue was avoided with bass clarinetists because they did their study on soprano clarinet.

Hello, Allen Cole--

I think David has a point about the "fear of flying", but I too have wondered if there are materials that are more tailored to the bass clarinet in the way the range of the instrument is worked.
