Bob... I'm pleased that your most recent testing of the Vandoren 56 is positive, mine unfortunately was much less satisfying.

Just for the record, I have played with many professional freelance clarinetists over the past few months and have tried to make note of their preferred reed choice. Most are either playing (in descending order) Vandoren V12's, Gonzalez FOF, Grand Concerts, or Zonda. I have yet to find anyone using (or has even tried) the Vandoren 56.

Strictly unscientific, I know ...GBK

$2.30 per single reed?

I would sooner shell out that kinda dough to Phil Muncy to buy genuinely hand-made reeds.

Seems a steep price to pay for what should be common practice on EVERY reed in each box, doncha think?

gbk: one of the reasons that many of your professional players are not using the 56 is because they just came out this week. give them time maybe they will make the cut.
as far as price is concerned the list is about $4.00 per reed. $2.30 was the discount price..

How do they compare with V12s? Are they simmilar to the Gonzales FOF? How about strength--what number of 56 would be the same as a number 3 V12?

Here is the review of the Vandoren 56 reeds that I wrote two months ago:

i quite liked the four i got at clarinetfest, but found the 3.5s both needed adjusting (haven't got around to it....) and the 3s were just fine in a small room, however not enough guts to play out in the orchestral situation. Now i think about it, i'll dig out the 3.5s and give them a scrub up. us$24 a box is still cheaper than the retail price of reeds in many other countries of the world where smaller markets mean that "economies of scale" keep the price higher. (there is a reason that i buy most of my reeds over the internet).
none of the players i know in Australia or NZ have even heard of these, and only a few of my american colleagues have tried them out. It's hardly suprising that no one is using them.

There are some samples in Australia but not enough to go around. The ZZ saxophone reeds arrived recently but only alto and tenor 3, 3.5 and 4. The retail for altos is AU$48.50 for 10 and I think the tenors are AU$36 for a box of 5. They are really soft numerically speaking, an alto 3 would be approximately a blue box 2 although they claim it is the same as a 2.5. Reports I have heard on the 56 clarinet is that they are also soft. The 56's are not due in Australia, so I also assume NZ, until February 2004 according to the importer. I am sticking to the blue box!

I have just ordered some from John Myatt in UK.
They cost €2.15 each.
As soon as I try them I will post my findings.
