The Clark Fobes "Debut" mouthpiece has been recommended for new or returnee players in many posts.
My wife is returning to the alto sax this year after a very long layoff and I thought I would try to give her a good start with a new mp. I see Clark has a "Debut" alto sax mp listed on his web page. I was wondering if any of our sax playing friends has any comment or recommendation on this or any other starter mp.

My youngest son has been using a Debut for the last 3 or 4 years. It is a very nice, smooth sounding mouthpiece, easy to work with for a beginner and I think very nice no matter what your level - perfect for "legit" work.
However, we're going to be getting a different one soon for the very reason that it's so smooth sounding - sometimes you need a "buzz saw" on sax ...

I don't think you could go wrong with a Morgan Pro-Tone alto saxophone mouthpiece. It's designed specifically for beginning players, it's hand-crafted with as much precision as the regular Ralph Morgan mouthpieces, and it's inexpensive.

IMHO, dont discount the older Selmer and Woodwind sax mps, I have several that are still very good, maybe best on Selmer/LeBlanc saxes of the 50-80s vintage. I prefer an OLD Martin [big] bari sax mp to the high-volume slim types. The Yahoo "group" Mouthpiece Work" often discusses these and refacing "experiments". Don

I echo Don - I have a Woodwind alto mouthpiece up on eBay right now (under "Steel Ebonite" - doesn't have a Woodwind mark, but it's the blank). I play on one myself, have another as a spare. They have a really sweet sound, and I find that clarinet players make the transition to them very easily.

Otto Link rubber mps are pretty good and not fussy.
I've just got a new toy, and it went straight off my old King 613 "student" (athough I always rated the sound far above modern ones) onto the new (sic) Dolnet alto.
Bel Air style and a perfect pairing to my M70 tenor. And in a hell of a lot better condition too...

Hi,
I always go back to an old Selmer C* or a short shank E. The Meyer 7M is for jazz whereas the C* (and an old VD V2 which is a pretty surprising MP) are concert band and legit work.
Although I own several classic Brillharts, they are not my favorites at all.
