Our Tulsa Comm. Band is planning for a concert [some sort of a US Hwy 66 celebration] with "tunes" related to our "Mother Road" [Joplin-Tulsa-OK City-Amarillo of times past!, now I 44 and 40]. We of course know of the "Kicks" tune [ad nauseum], but I have seen searching the 'net that Nelson Riddle wrote, and arranged, a "Theme" [for the TV Show??] for orch and band. Can someone help me find a source of a band arrangement, please? Also "our" folk-singer, Woody Guthrie, made mention of [now state hwy] 66 in some of his many songs, prob. can find them locally!! Will appreciate any/all info. TKS, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Hi Don,
It appears that the piece you are looking for was written by Bobby Troup.
If you go to Sheet Music Plus, and search under "composer" for "troup" (without the quotes), you'll get about a dozen hits. Most are for choral arrangements of the Route 66 Theme. The last one, however, is probably an arrangement for "young" stage band (but who knows, given SheetMusicPlus' descriptions).
The publisher is Hal Leonard. I presume you would be able to cover all the parts with members of your band.
You can also find the piece at stagepass.com:
http://www.stagepass.com/cgi-bin/search/allproduct/searchdatabase.pl?m=and&type=artist&kwrds=Troup
is a direct link. If that doesn't work, try:
http://www.stagepass.com/groupartist/
Then search "artist" for "troup" (without the quotes).
The parts (if that's what they have) cost $40.
Best regards,
jnk

The big band that I play with has the "Route 66" arrangement in our books.
We needed to purchase it because of a particular wedding where the bride insisted on having it played.
It is a Jr.High/High School arrangement for standard big band/jazz band (5 saxes/4 trumpets/4 trombones/rhythm) but perhaps with "creative adapting" you can use it in your concert band. If I remember correctly, the arrangement opens up for a tenor sax solo towards the end ...GBK

For Woody Guthrie songs about Route 66, you might want to check the archives of the Woody Guthrie foundation.
http://www.woodyguthrie.org/index.htm
Billy Bragg and Wilco wrote new music to song lyrics from the Woody Guthrie archives and put out 2 albums entitled Mermaid Avenue. The first is especially good. I don't think they chose any Route 66 songs.

TKS, Jack and GBK, for the stagepass link and commentary, is your "book", GBK, a "source"?. I cant recall the TV Route 66 Theme, did Riddle just arrange Troup's "song" for the Jazz Ensemble Series charts [$45 for pros?] as listed by Stagepass? I had concluded that the "theme" was a more "elaborate" orch/band arr'm't. We have enough "old dance-banders" [like me] to make up an ensemble from our band, to blow most tunes, so I'll check with our conductors/directors to see what they want to do. Sure appreciate the links and education therefrom. Fun, aint it? Don

Don: Our band's arrangement may be the same as GBK's. The arrangement is by Bob Lowden.

Don... We have the "Route 66" theme in our big band library.
I just checked, and it is for standard big band scoring: 5 saxes/4 trumpets/ 4 trombones and rhythm. You could probably adapt it in some sort for your concert band use. The chart is not too bad, and has some nice jazz figures. It doesn't sound "high schoolish" at all ...GBK

I think Don Berger wants the "Theme From 'Route 66'", from the televsion series, by Nelson Riddle. This is not the Bobby Troup tune. It may be found on pg 72 of "The TV Fake Book", published by Hal Leonard. I got my copy at a local Sam Ash store. But it is not a score, just a fakebook lead sheet. I imagine GBK is talking about this same theme and not the Bobby Troup song?

What a fine method of finding friends, info re: sources of music and their "character", history etc, etc, Mark C!! Especial TKS to Jack, GBK [2], Eileen, Henry, Steve for many $'s-worth of education. All this amazed my band's two conductors, and is encouraging them to start the "construction" of our concert program. Our local library had copies of "Route 66" by Michael Wallis [lots of nostalgic pics, little musical info], and "Hard Travelin' " [Woody Guthrie] by Santelli & Davidson, pub. for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, [www.rockhall.com], Cleveland !!, to whom I ?sent? an E-M regarding their mention of "66 Highway Blues" co-composed by Pete Seeger! So I will prob. be looking for a source of it as well.. Again, many thanx for all help. Don

Also TKS, Eileen, for the Woody G Foundation link, [put it on my Favorite Places list, for my folk-singing daughter!!] . I did some searching for the "66 Hwy Blues", recordings, book-mention, etc to no avail so we may have to pass it by. I'd conclude, from non-mention, that its a "lesser" work, likely? a 3 chord 12 bar blues ballad "of little note nor long remembrance". Surprised at the many CD/tapes, and books. Thanx, Don

The Nelson Riddle composition is recorded on either vol.1 or vol.2 of 65 Greatest TV Themes. I have never heard of a band arrangement. In searching for it, though, Nelson Riddle should definitely be listed as the composer. I'll let you know if I run into anything.
