Have any of you ever played traditional Tango music on the clarinet? I think I may have a Tango gig in September. Can you recommend and recordings of Tango with clarinet, or at least with wind players? Thanks!

Do a search on Astor Piazzolla -- there are probably more recordings than you can count. Off the top of my head, there is a very nice disc by Gidon Kremer,"Hommage a Piazzolla", that has Michel Portal on at least one track.

Well, the bandoneon(sp?) is a wind instrument isn't it?

Giora Feidman put out a CD a while back called ClarinetTango... one or two t's in the spelling, I can't recall. There is also a tune book (in concert pitch) that goes with this. Both can be ordered fromTara Publications - http://www.jewishmusic.com. His interpretations may not be standard but they will knock your socks off. He plays on all the clarinets, including basset horn.

The Soul of the Tango with YoYo Ma is a nice transcription.
I think if you get the last of the actual Piazzola recordings, it will point you in the right direction.
It may help to scowl while playing Tango...

A good book with parts written out for Bflat instruments and an accompanying CD that has an excellent tango accompaniment.

Piazzolla did six etudes for saxophone/clarinet that are all characteristic of his tango style. They are a terrific set and great warm up for serious modern tango playing.
I have played several Piazzolla pieces for piano and clarinet, piano, violin and clarinet, and clarinet and orchestra (most of which have been arranged specifically for the performances). Piazzolla did a Four Seasons all of which translate well for clarinet and piano or small ensemble. Anos de Soledad was originally for baritone sax but is very nice on either clarinet or bass clarinet. Typically the calrinet carries the bandoneon line on these pieces....
