I just received a Buffet clarinet that I bought off eBay.

Is this an R13? Serial # is 242868
Upper joint looks virtualy the same as "my R13" including standard Buffet emblem.
Lower joint has same serial number, has no emblem, is marked "MADE IN W GERMANY". The sliver key and the spade connetion to the upper joint are a bit different from "my r13". It has no emblem.
Bell has the standard Buffet emblem
Barrel has no emblem.
There is no model number or other marks.
"My R13" is serial 85452. I have owned it since it was new.
Were R13s made in W Germany?

The keywork is similar to the E-11. I would take it outside on a bright day and see if there isn't a faint stamp below the Buffet trademark.

While there should be an R13 out there somewhere with your serial number, I don't think you have it. According to the serial number list at www.musicgroup.com, 242868 could be an E11 made in 1983. (BTW, according to that list, if you do have an R13, it was also made in 1983.) Given that E11's are made in Germany (starting in 1981) but R13's are only made in France, I think you have an E11. As John Butler suggests, the E11 marking is probably on the upper joint below the Buffet logo though for an instrument that old it might have rubbed off by now. I have heard that there was a very brief period around 1981 when Buffet did not put model numbers on its clarinets. I don't know whether that is fact or not but, even if it is true, 1983 sounds a little late for your instrument not to have had the E11 marking.
On an E11, the right hand cluster keys on the lower joint are probably a little smaller than your R13. Also, I would expect that the linkages on the left hand cluster keys are not "pin and socket" but rather "overlapping levers" (my terms, not Buffet's).
IMHO, if the clarinet is in decent shape, you still made a pretty good buy even if it is an E11.

Sunshine shed no light on it. (pun intended)
Looking at it with a loupe shows some cross grain scratches from sanding. Emblem looks fine but theres no sign of E11. I suspect E11 was lost during an overhaul as sanding marks show over whole body.
Compared with E11 pictures on ebay, sliver key, spade connection link (what's the proper nomeclature for this "connertion link"?) and case look similar. Key cluster sizes look the sameas my R13 to my eyes. It does have the over-lapping levers vice the pin and socket.
I was thinking about trying a V45 mouthpiece any way. This had the $145 buy it now, so I new I couldn't loose. Mouthpiece is practicaly brand new. Quite a bit of flaking of the nickle key plating and needs pads, other wise looks like a fine instrument. Thanks for you input.
