Working up Artie Shaw's Stardust---having trouble producing altissimo B (and C). Used all the fingering chart stuff, but can only occasionally hit em'. No problems with altissimo F, G and A......setup--Selmer 10S II, Larry Combs LC3, Vandoren Blue Box 2 or 2-1/2.............Could use some suggestions here......thanks.....

Harder reeds would probably help. I find that with Legere 3's and my Borbeck, I have to work a LOT harder to get those two notes than I do with Leger 3-1/4's.

And when I was in Bulgaria a couple of years ago, my teacher there tried after I played those 2 for him, and with his Vandy 5JB and Rico Plasticover 2's (or were they 1-1/2's?) he just COULDN'T get 'em.

Try Robert Spring's long tone warmup exercise from low E to alt C. After a couple of months, those high notes seem much easier. It can be found on the internet, but I don't have the site name handy. Good luck.

my teacher informed me that the reed vibrates from the sides for altissimo B and C. what you can try doing is sliding you bottom lip slightly forward, it works for me. harder reeds also help.

Forward? I can get alt. C reliably and several notes above alt. C somewhat less reliably by taking as little of my lip as possible over my teeth. That can be done by rolling back toward the tip of the mouthpiece. Reasonably firm reeds also of course (3 1/2 or more).

a problem could also be not taking in enough mouthpiece.
