I was very impressed with a recording I heard of the jazz saxophonist Serge Charloff. Anyone heard his recordings? Any opinions?

He's considered one of the all-time great baritone saxophonists, along with Harry Carney, Leo Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, Ron Cuber, Nick Brignola, Bruce Johnstone, (who have I missed?).

An interesting anecdote. Like Stan Getz Chaloff was known for memorising the bands book and not reading the charts. While at a gig somewhere near a lake Woody Herman lost it completely with Serge and sacked him from the band. Serge's reaction was to throw the baritone book in the water forcing Woody to keep using him until the book was re-copied for a replacement to play. Some people will do anything to keepa gig.

I've heard that one before (except it was on the River Charles vs. a lake), with the added dialogue:
Serge: "What do you see over there?"
Woody: "Water."
Serge: "Look more closely."
Woody: "Well, there's some littler floating in it."
Serge: "That 'litter' is the band's baritone book, and I'm the only person who knows it by heart!"

For Sege fans out there I have the Boston 1950 disc on Uptown records.
Its a great CD and should be available from most places with a good jazz selection. some really great solos on it.
