Hello,
I have been at a serious music camp for over a week now (would prefer not to specify which) and I'm beginning to experience something I never really have before. At school I always want to stay in band when the bell rings, and I love coming home and picking out music to listen to while I do my homework, and I'm almost always glad to practice. But here I'm surrounded by music all the time and sometimes I really feel like I need a break. The constant music in the practice rooms is starting to drive me crazy, yesterday I was next to a french horn player who kept playing the same phrase over and over for an HOUR. I was just about ready to take him or her out. I had a great practice session last night and that made me feel better, but I'm still worried. Is it normal to want to get away from music sometimes? I'm also experiencing a little anxiety, I'm really worried that I'm not improving, that I'm just getting worse. And I'm afraid I'll keep getting worse and worse until I'm just as bad as I was when I started but this time it will be irreversible. I know that sounds crazy, but I'm actually freaking out. Help!?

Anyone who can hear screams, can also hear music.

You have just explained two key factors in most music schools...

Soundproofing in practice rooms

The white parts of the score (ya know, where there innit enny notes)...

Boot camps are designed to press you to your limits, and extend them.
Under duress, you will descend to the level of your training.

The harder this is, the easier the regular days will be.

Make the most of 'down time' during the schedule and GET AWAY.

I think everything you're experiencing is totally normal. When you're not practicing - try wearing earplugs so that your ears don't get so overworked. Keep practicing, but be sure to give yourself some time off. If the dude next to you is driving you nuts - take a walk or something. (and avoid practicing next to a tuba player....;-). Good luck - you'll be fine!

What you say about the french horn player is fairly typical. If they are not playing the same phrase over and over they are playing the same lip slurs. I recognise that repetition is important but horn players seem to need about 50 times more than the rest of us, and for what? They spend most of their time playing off beats. Maybe practice time is the only time they get to play anything else. Beware the trumpet player who wants to be Bud Brisbois or Arturo Sandoval, there lies madness.
