You probably need to upgrade your vehicle if you are considering one. Possibly a light truck.

If I read correctly, they only made one. So, my guess is that the present owner(s) can ask whatever they want. I'd be interested to know too, Contrabasssax, what that might be. I believe you'd have to prove a genuine interest and a super-hefty bank roll to get a response.

a contrabass sax is about 40000 dollars. I know for a fact there was more than one made because Ive herd of 12 of them.

Orsi make contrabass saxophones. There is a video-clip of one of their instrument makers playing one:

I don't think there is a set price for one of these since there is only one instrument existing, in the LeBlanc collection. So, it's a pretty rare item. This shuld be enough of an answer.

The only person I know personally who ever played one is the Norwegian clarinetist Terje Lerstad, also the only person who I know ever wrote anything for the instrument(?), http://www.contrabass.com/pages/octobass.html
and he claimes there were two made and that he played the one that is not in the LeBlanc collection.

I think you can call off the ambition to ever get one. I think they only made prototypes as an experiment to see if it was possible to get a sound out of such a large clarinet. Also I think the instrument is priceless being a curiosity for the company.

Maybe if you are the right person and establish exeptionally good contacts with the company and with Mr LeBlanc himself and compose a major piece including the instrument there is a chance that you ever get to play one.

Alphie: I, for one, am not quite ready to establish contact with Mr. Leblanc himself, exceptionally good or otherwise.

Regards,
John

I am contra bass sax challenged. I must admit the largest I have played is the ordinary bass sax in Bb which are great and under utilised. I have done a fair bit of contra bassoon playing and find it fun. One highlight was playing the contra in the Richard Strauss Serenade for Winds. There is something particularly grunty 2 bassoons and a contra bringing up the rear.

Contrabasssax - Yes, I read about it at the contrabass compendium. :) Adrian Rollini is my favorite bass saxophonist (possibly my favorite sax player, period), but there were others who were also quite good . . . Right now, Spencer Clark is the only other coming to mind, however! :']

I heard some incredible jazz bass sax playing on the radio the other day, by James Carter, from his CD "Chasin' the Gypsy" (including circular breathing, for crying out loud!).
