 Buffet Model?
Author: Rosemary

My sister has lent her Buffet clarinet to my daughter who clarinet was stolen in May. I believe that my parents bought this clarinet for my sister in the early to mid-70's, when she was in high school. The serial number marked on one of the joints is 131867, but I see no marking anywhere to know what model it is. Where would that be indicated on the clarinet?

The only other number I found is a B61 marked at the lower end of the barrel. My sister said that she remembered having to buy a shorter barrel for the clarinet at some point, but at this point, this is the only one we have.

I did check the page that had the Buffet clarinet serial numbers, but it seemed like there were two different places that the serial number would fit, so I didn't know which would apply.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If it has no model designation on it, it's likely an R-13. That serial number would put its year of manufacture as 1972. I understand that was a good time period for R-13s, so there may be some envious folks here.

Rosemary...From the serial number, it is most likely a Buffet R-13 from 1972.

There should be matching serial numbers on both the upper and lower joints.

The barrel length of 61mm is quite short for a Bb clarinet. Most players find that a barrel of 66mm works best. (some players will often use a barrel a millimeter shorter or longer).

Buffet clarinets from the early 70's were excellent instruments with nicely aged wood...GBK

hmm, well I have a similar situation, too, my model number is 79740, and I'm fairly sure that it's from 1964 according to the buffet website, any thoughts on the model, quality, etc?

It probably is a buffet R-13 from 1972, a very good year I might add. Sorry about your loss. Did your daughter leave it at school? In your car? Was it stolen from your home? If it was stolen from school, you might want to contact the administration and see if they can help. If solen from in one of the other methods, you could call the police and have them (or you can) look in local ponshops. Look for the serial numbers, or try to identify by the look of he clarinet or case. Hope this helps!

Thank you all. I will let my sister know what she has. I do remember that it was a very good professional horn. My daughter's clarinet was a LeBlanc L7 in pretty good condition and she is very heartbroken to have lost it. It was stolen from her car, and is listed on the Hot Instruments page here in the forum. We are hoping that no similar event will occur with this one.

My daughter did find that the clarinet is extremely sharp with the shorter barrel, so we may have to look into finding a longer one somewhere.

One of my concerns in finding out which model it is was to know whether the keys were silver or nickel plated, so my daughter can take appropriate care of them.

Thanks again!

Rosemary
