 Changing Ligature
Author: MarchingHans

Hi. My name is Hans and I play in my high school band class.

Recently I'm getting a lot of squeaks and some sort of metal sound

while playing clarinet. Also my teacher told me that the tone is

bad and I have to change mouthpiece. But good mouthpieces(Vandoren)

are too expensive for me. So I'm thinking of chainging ligature.

I've been using traditional style metal ligature.

Does ligature have a great impact on sound quality? If it does, what are

some recommended fabric ligatures?

Thank you.

Send your mouthpiece away to get refaced.

I sent mine to Dave Spiegelthal. I think the total was about 30 dollars for all the work. And my mouthpiece plays like a dream!

Good advice from sfa. Re; ligs, many of us feel they make very little difference in sound quality. My fancier ones are more for show and personal satisfaction, the metal inverteds hold reeds tighter than the plastics which MAY give a darker tone. Try, Don

As to refacing, if your mouthpiece is of poor quality and cheap plastic it may not be worth it to have it refaced. If you don't have the money you could consider going to something like the Fobes Debut, which while it is inexpensive, is well made and a bargain for the money.

Is there a specific budget you have? Cause that'd help limit the otions available to youy. I assumed that you've looked at vandoren mouthpieces and deemd them too expensive right now at a $60 price tag. Which is why I suggested the mouthpiece refacing. But Don's right. The mouthpeice you have now may not be worth refacing. What MP do you hace now? And what's your budget?

Hans, if you'll send me a personal email, I might be able to help you out with a mouthpiece. I've got some spares that I don't play much anymore.

I found quite a difference when I moved from a $3 came-with-the-clarinet mouthpiece to a decent Rovner. Then again, that's when I was in high school and everything was the reed's fault or the mouthpiece's fault and never due to my playing style.

well, if a vandoren mouthpiece's too expensive, then perhaps a shoelace will do? it really is the cheapest option out there, you can get decent shoelaces for what, 2 bucks? A shoelace works amazingly well, even better than my rovner half of the time, and it's the best value in the world. Try that first, then go do everything else. And ligatures definitely do make somewhat of a difference, although not nearly as much as a mouthpiece.

The first switch i made for ligatures was from the cheap metal lig that came with the horn to a Luyben. Theyre plastic, and sell for aroung 5 dollars. I played on it all thru JHS untill my jr year. It produces a nice sound and responds well with reeds. Untill i got my vandoren optimum it was the best 5 dollar investments i made.

Since this thread began as a[nother] ligature discussion, I'll add these US patent #'s, which, in their References Cited, list many of the more-popular lig patents under inventor name, also often tradename. They are 5,398,582 and 4,428,271, viewable via www.uspto,gov . Read!, Don
