Hope this isn't too far off topic for all my fellow clarinet geeks.
The New York Times is following one concert grand piano through its eight-month construction process at the Steinway factory in Queens. This is the second article in the series, which includes a link to the first article from March:
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/10/nyregion/10PIAN.html (registration required, which is free and IMHO very worthwhile)
I've always been fascinated by Steinways. I just wish I could play the darn things.

Me too, even though a S would be impossible to disassemble and carry about in a small (even double) case.

Thanks Ralph. My father strung grand pianos as a young man(Kimballs) so I've always been fascinated with the process too.....

With coverage of Steinways in the New York Times and coverage of pianos in the Economist, one must wonder what's driving the coverage, much as I enjoy reading it. Has it anything to do with weapons of mass destruction, middle east turmoil, Hillary Clinton's book, or Funny Cide's future?!

The Economist and Steinway cohabitate on 57th Street, so it is probably a little professional courtesy because of Steinway's 150th anniversary celebration. The coverage in the Times is probably also in large part stimulated by the Steinway (Scrabble word coming up) Sesquicentennial.
