 what model is this Yamaha?

I’m a non-practicing clarinetist. That is to say, after getting a BA in Clarinet performance I’ve moved on to other things. But that was ten years ago. About a year ago a friend gave me a clarinet he found in a parking lot. He called all the local schools etc to try to find an owner but had no luck. It’s a Yamaha, and being a Buffet snob I didn’t pay it much attention…until last week. A friend of mine asked me to play for her when she sings “I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine” next week and as my other clarinets aren’t with me at the moment I decided to pull the Yamaha out and give it a go. Well, I was really impressed. It’s not a bad instrument at all and now I’m curious as to what exactly it is. Can anyone help me figure out what model it is? The barrel has no markings. The upper joint has

“YAMAHA

ESTABLISHED
IN 1887
JAPAN

352F”

The bell has

ESTABLISHED
IN 1887
JAPAN

I would appreciate any information on this clarinet including ways to get it back to its owner. Thanks.

Did you report the find to the local police? Just a thought!

Henry makes a very good point, Peter. It's not your instrument.

You say you have other instruments, though they're not with you at the moment. Well, if you're serious about playing for your friend go fetch 'em.

I believe you need to make more effort to return the clarinet to its rightful owner who, in this circumstance, probably DOES care that the sun don't shine just now. Surely it has some little something unusual about it or something in the case that the owner could use to identify it if you would run an ad in your local newpaper's classifieds. I think it's a free service the world over.

Maybe earning your BA prepared you for something like this but, personally, I wouldn't be able to play one note on it.

As I said, my friend tried the local schools and I should have mentioned that The police were also informed. He worked for about two months trying to find the owner and I am satisfied with his efforts. And, ron b, I have no problems with playing it at this point. Its not just the finder who needs to make an effort to get it back to its owner.

In my original post I asked for ideas to get it back to its original owner. I should have been more specific regarding what actions had already been taken. When I pulled it out of the case this week it occured to me to try a clarinet message board because there is a network of players who may have heard of someones lost instrument or know of a message board that specifically deals with lost/stolen instruments.

As to your comment regarding something unusual about the clarinet-- nothing. Only a brand new reed and an unopened bottle of Yamaha key oil in the case. I almost get the feeling that this was somthing a salesman was delivering somewhere.

So again, I ask if

1. anyone has any new ideas on how to get it back to its owner, and
2. could someone tell me about he model?
