Recently, I have been experiancing pain in my right shoulder and right back shoulder blade after long periods of performance (ex symphony rehersal/concert). I am wondering if this one of the joys of the aging clarinet player (just turned 59) or if it is a general problem with our musical endevours. Would a neck strap help??? Anyhone out there with info?? Thanks, and good clarineting to all!!!!!

You're probably thinking the pain may be related to the right hand supporting the weight of the clarinet? You could be right. If this indeed the problem a neckstrap, used properly, will indeed help. You should, however, also seek medical advice.

True [again] Kevin. Playing mainly bass lately, I had rt shoulder/arm pain, so now use the floor-support [rod] with the neck strap for security [belt and suspenders!]. I also at times have rt index finger cramp/numbness [I'm 80!]so may occasionally go up or down an octave to relieve stress from repetitive passages. Heresy? Don

Dear William,
I have something similar to what you are discribing. Although I am not 59, I can say that age has something to do with it.
Whether or not you believe in it or not, chiropractics it the way to go. I would swear by them. I was thought to have carpal tunnel syndrome from playing for so many years and come to find out that my spine was just out of alignment. After about a year of therapy, I feel great and ready to re-assume my career on clarinet. Find a good chiropractor and a physical therapist (sp?) and you will be playing as good as new, if not better.
Good luck and keep playing.
Darrel
P.S. Please stay away from the neck strap. That could only make things worse. As they say, "Been there, done that!"

Darrel, while I'm sure that the techniques you have described have helped you, the neckstrap has helped others. Kepp an open mind about it, just as you have asked others about chiropractic techniques.
