I went to the music store and dropped $10 on one which had been returned (usually $15), I have used it for several months now in conjunction with my Korg chromatic tuner. It is very nice. You can clip it onto any part of the clarinet and the tuner indicates what you are playing not the fellow sitting next to you or the trumpet across the room who is overblowing to make a statement.
I find I am clipping it onto my sax or clarinet, whatever I am playing. I use it most when just playing. In a performance it is nice to have a check on the pitch... I am more accurate on pitch than ever before. I really know before anyone else that my horn is trending sharp as it warms up. When I do a quick swap to the A clarinet I start with it pushed all the way in and immediately I am playing in tune. Then a few minutes later I am pulling out to keep centered as it warms up.
I am the first to admit that I don't have the best of ears... never have, and now that I am turning 50 I am loosing some of my high pitch sensitivity. With this set up I am doing better than ever before. If I had known how much I would like this I probably would have done it sooner and even sprung for the whole $15! I am not worried that this is keeping me from developing a better ear... it hasn't happened up until now so it never will. This mechanical aid does however let your other skills advance even if your ears won't.
IMHO, TH
