Hi, My name is Clayton and I need help. I am planning to major in music, and am investing in a backup clarinet. I have found a company, Jinyin, and have discovered that they make hard rubber clarinets. How do these differ from the plastic and wooden clarinets? Is it worth investing in? Also, for my own information, is it beneficial to have gold keys? Does this effect tone? Would gold keys be more likely to bend? Thank You for respondng to my inquiries!!

Stay as far away as you can from Jinyin clarinets! These clarinets are shotty chinese crap. Gold keys are gold plated keys......some think they add darkness to the tone. There are so many brands of clarinets that are much more suitable. There was a post yesturday on this subject as well. -Corey

be afraid ... be very afraid.

The Jinyan are junk.

Stay with a known maker. Leblanc, Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha there may be a few others worthy but these are a safe bet.

From what I have read--READ not tried-- the above comments are correct. You might try an Amati, Seem reasonably priced and suitable not only for a backup but your primary (contrary to the R13 mafia's thoughts).

Msroboto has said all that needs be said, Clayton.
I've seen them up close and personal so I feel I can safely say that even when they're working all right they're not all right. They are poorly designed, ergonomic nightmares -- repair resistant and fabrcated of all around inferior material; right up there in the Top Ten of reputable repair shops "Avoid Working On..." lists.
For your own information, Jinyins are a waste of their material and your money.

I know someone who had the misfortune to buy one of these Jinyan "clarinets" and they are indeed absolute rubbish. If you are looking for an ebonite clarinet you might find it useful to look at the Hanson Clarinets web-site. I bought one of these last year and am very pleased with it......good value for what it is.
