U.K. uni's.

Hiya.

Just after a bit of advice about music degrees in the U.K. I'm looking to do a BMus at a uni. I'm discussing this with all my teachers and any friends that went on to study music. Really I was wondering where anybody here would suggest considering, then I could have a gander at what the course is like and whether perhaps I should consider it for me.

A very good friend of mine went through at Royal Northern in Machester. She's a fantastic player and did well there.

You should get prospectuses for most of the Music colleges (i.e. Royal Academy, Royal College, Royal Northern, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Birmingham Conservatoire etc.). The audition process alone will be a valuable experience, but be aware that they incur fees just to audition.

I'm currently at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and it's going well. As well as the music colleges though, various universities offer fantastic courses such as Huddersfield which is exceptionally good if you are contemporary music minded since it hosts the contemporary music festival.

What sort of course do you want to be on?

If its a BMus you are after it is not just the colleges but the universities as well. The range is potentially very wide, so you need to consider your priorities in selection criteria and then look at some web sites as astarting point.

I am just about to finish my A Levels. I have a place at the Birmingham Conservatoire next year and can't wait!

If you want to do performance look at the music colleges:

Royal Northern College of Music
Royal College of Music
Royal Academy of Music
Birmingham Conservatoire
Guildhall School of Music and Drama
Royal Scottish Academy of Music
Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama
Trinity College of Music

If you want to do the more theoretical and historical side there are many fantastic Universities:

Royal Holloway, University of London
The University of Sheffield
The University of Birmingham
The University of Manchester - They do a joint course with the Royal Northern College of Music
The University of Cambridge
The University of Nottingham
The University of York
Kings College, University of London

Some uni's offer instrumental lessons at the nearest music college.

You can apply for six uni's through UCAS (University and College Admissions Service. It costs around £15. You can also apply for as many music colleges as you wish.

It does cost around £45 per audition which adds up plus then if you wanna use your own accompanist (I did this, i felt more comfortable). Accompanist costs can soon add up (I think I had to pay mine around £32 per hour.) All the colleges provide a accompanist though for auditions. I used one of the "in house" accompanists at the Royal Northern College of Music and he was fantastic - he knew the Brahms E Flat Major Sonata, Poulenc Sonata and Arnold Sonatina like the back of his hand! (Also heard him doing the Debussy Rhapsodie and Milhaud Duo - very impressive!)
