This is not exactly your normal ligature question, since the Gigliotti mouthpieces tend to be a lot "fatter" than your average mouthpiece. Here's what I've tried . . . not much, but what I've tried.
Standard stock metal lig - doesn't get around it comfortably.
Rovner MKIII - works great with another mpc I have, unfortunately not so
much with the Gigliotti
Bonade Inverted - Doesn't fit around it comfortably
and of course
Gigliotti Ligature - I like the sound, but it's made of plastic and my screws
strip/snap and the ribs that once were are now being
squished down too much
Any other recommendations that would fit this lig and are a decent price (no 70 dollar optimums or 100 dollar olegatures please!)

I didn't have any problems with the Rovner Eddie Daniels II and the Gigliotti P34.

Hi,
I have played on a Gigliotti ligature for several decades and have had no problems with stripped screws. The force required to compress one of the ribs would have to be quite high. How tight are you making the screws?????

I personally would try an Optimum ligature as:
1. The construction and durability are superb.
2. I like the sound the best out of many ligatures I've tried.
3. I feel its a worthwhile investment for a serious musician. Perhaps a used one could be found for lesser cost.

I had another thought that might be very cost effective--- and fun?
Try a.......string ligature!
You could experiment with your own or try one of the commercially available ones. Let us know if you try----Good luck!

Yes I did end up overtightening in order to get the screw to snap . . . but has your ligature succumbed to the pressure as much as mine has? My ribs that hold the reed onto the mouthpiece have flattened out and now it is defeating the purpose of the reeds since the reed is held on by the side as well as the front (the ribs were supposed to keep the ligature from touching the sides).
I don't know about the optimum. I know a great many people DON'T use it and sound fine so I'm wondering if its worth shelling out the money for it (if I had a FT job I might, but right now I'm not gonna).
And for the string lig, is it really necessary to file a small notch in your mouthpiece like the instructions say on one of the pages here? Or can you start it without one . . .?

BG ligatures work very nicely with both the P and P34s. I use the Gigliotti ligatures with my students because they are consistent, sound decent and you can't crush them as kids typically do. For myself, I get a richer sound and more responsive articulation out of the BGs and they fit the 34 well, particularly the Revelation and Super Revelation.

i have a gigliotti mouthpiece myself and the vandoren optimum ligature works great for it. it's worth it to buy one.

Actually, I have taken a Dremel and cut out the center portion of the ligature so only a small amount on the end of each rib touches the reed. I have had no problem with the ligature.
IMHO, you seem to have been over-tightening.

The Optimum is worth the price. It's by far the best and I've tried a lot.
You can always use rubberbands.

I played on a Gigliotti for a long time in school and used a Bay Medium (Rhodium plated) ligature. It fit perfectly and was a great combo as far as getting the most vibrations out of the reed. Give it a try, but be careful about overtightening this one...you'll snap it in a heartbeat! I also used a Bonade before the Bay and it worked okay as well, but the Bay was MUCH better for that mouthpiece. If the medium doesn't fit, there is a large.
P.S. It looks really pretty with all the nice designs on it!
