 mouthpiece enigma

I keep seeing comments about mouthpieces. I recently replaced my old original mouthpiece with a Vandoren5RV.
The music store guy recommended it. I'm not sure I can tell the difference. It is probably just my level of playing skill. Is this something only a good player can tell?

If your old mouthpiece was similar to the 5RV you have now, then the difference will be minimal.

Having said that, I'm a relative beginner, but last year when I was checking out mouthpieces I could tell differences between mouthpieces that were supposedly identical. Now, mind you, I couldn't tell if one was "better or worse" than another, but I _could_ tell they were different. Sometimes the sound would be a bit different, or maybe the resistance, or maybe something else.

Now, slightly off this particular topic. I recently switched to a Peter Spriggs floating rail ligature. The sound on my clarinet "darkened" considerably vis a vis my Rovner, and the response is better. My friend, who has remarked in the past that my clarinet is pretty bright compared to his RC Prestige, commented on how nice my clarinet sounded. He tried it out on his clarinet and ...

It made his clarinet sound _much_ brighter than mine! We were amazed that it would make so much difference, and the effect would be exactly _opposite_ what I experienced.

Which all goes to show - don't trust our experiences in general. Try things out for yourselves, or borrow a friends piece of equipment first :^) We really mean it when we say:

YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary)

Cheers,
Mark C.

Thanks for the comments Mark. There really are so many variables (Brands, types within the Brands, mouthpieces, reeds, skill...) I guess a lot of it comes down to what you think sounds good and if other people can stand to listen.
I'll just keep trying to have fun with it. I tried out a Selmer Signature recently; what a beautiful instrument. I don't need one, but I can dream.

Dear Michael,
I also replaced my original mouthpiece with the 5rvl. I can tell the difference, you should probably be able to, but I'm not sure.

I have been trying to practice more lately and I switched back and forth between the Vandoren and my old mouthpiece--I can tell a difference now. I definitely like the 5RV better. I also switched to the D. BONADE ligature and could tell the difference between that and my old ligature without the ridges. The only technical difficulty with this ligature is I can't take the mouthpiece off the instrument without the reed coming off too. Not a big problem really just different than what I was use to. Michael
