I wanted to know the amount of woodwind directors, specifically clarinet band directors, out ther, or primarily in Texas, because I am not sure where I stand in my playing. Sure, they are great musicians to, but Im not sure that they are aware of my skill level. Becuse Im not famialiar with the clarinet world, (began playing no to long ago), IM not sure where im going wuth my playing. I think im a perty well player, but whose to say what my pooblems are or what im doing wrong (my tounging, no one really knows what im talking about). Luckly this board helps tremendously, but it would be nice to know a clarinetist. Well, not to ramble on, do you have to depend on a professional to get you "up there" or is it mainly on the player. Im sure that its mostly the player, but does one need assistance of a professional to get an idea of how to play it well? Also, whats the competition like out there in the world of performing arts for clarinetist, and this is an unrelavent question, whats the hardest piece of music for clarinet in general?

I'd like to answer your question, but I am already 62 and don't have that much time left.......
However, in brief--I'm one clarinetist band director "out there." Most intrumentalists, who have found successful careers in playing professionally, have had the help of mentors (private teacher-specialists) somewhere along the way. I took private lessons in high school, majored in clarinet and education at the university level, and have practiced my buns off for as long as I can remember to be as good as I can be. And the "compitition is fierce, with so many good--if not great--musicians (clarinetists for our purpose here) competing for a relatively small amount of professional positions with orchestras or college teaching positions.
Bottom line--to help you find out "where you are" in your playing, get a few lessons from a private teacher. Then, as they say, "play it by ear."

Well Done, Wm, [please be like me, tho, with 20 years more already, still talking!]. I pondered as to how to discuss such a broad ?, and my lack of info surpasses the time element. Our #1 C B conductor, has MANY years as WW Prof at Tulsa U, more cl than others, and doesn't hesitate to teach all of our cl'ists, me included, how to play better, TKS. Our #2 cond. plays mainly sax, and more. WW players also make fine conductors!! Don
