At the suggestion of my mouthpiece-maker I'm trying an E flat mp with a tip opening substantially larger than that which I use on the B flat.
At first I didn't believe him, but I trust his judgement (he's a great player too) and found that it works really well.
I have B flat mps with 47, 48 and 49 thousandths of an inch (119.5, 122, 125) and this is 51 (130)
Has anyone else tried this idea? Do any other makers go along these lines?

What I think is crucial to making a good eefer mouthpiece is preventing the tip from 'closing up' in the upper clarion and altissimo registers, and this requirement can be met in two ways: a larger tip opening, or a sharper 'break' (transition) between the flat table and the beginning of the facing curve. My preference is the latter approach of making a more 'standard' tip opening but taking pains to make a symmetric (between the two rails) and very definite break between table and facing. The downside of the first approach of using a large tip opening to achieve the same ends, is that excessively large tip openings tend to sound 'breathy' and unfocussed, and of course require the player to use a softer reed than he/she might otherwise use. But like they say, there's more than one way to skin a cat.....

Must be great to have your own mouthpiece maker! And one that offers advice too. Just find something that works and use it unless you like spending money for the sake of it. It is in the interest of the mouthpiece maker to sell as many as possible.
