I am doing this competetion for a scholarship and the requirements are:
One German Piece
One French Piece
One American Piece
Okay so 1 and 2 are easy, I am doing Weber's Second Concerto and Debussy's Premire Rhapsody.
Now my problem is what do I play for american literature? I really don't have much jazz expierence and at the moment I feel the copland is a little over bearing considering how much rep I have going at performance level at the moment.
Does anyone have an suggestions for a Clarinet concerto/sonata by an american composer?

Copland Concerto? Wasn't that written for Benny G? In that case I'd think it was an american that wrote it. Though I could be (and probably am) wrong.

Here are 3 fairly obvious possibilities:
Bernstein - Sonata
Gershwin - Three Preludes
Copland -Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (transcribed by the composer from his sonata for Violin and Piano)
More obscure:
Louise Talma - Three Dialogues for clarinet and piano
Additional American composers to consider:
Donald Martino
Elliot Carter
Meyer Kupferman
Vincent Persichetti
Arthur Frackenpohl
William Bolcom
There are many others...GBK
