Hi to all....................
I plan to arrange "When Jesus Wept" for a clarinet ensemble. This is the first time Ive ever attempted something like this, and Im not sure what im exactly doing. I do know that this piece was originally for choir, so the parts are not to complicated. Its a rather beutiful piece of music. At first I intend to use: Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet, and alto and base clarinet. I would like to hear any tips, suggestions or comments on this, generally some help in the right direction, for example, what instrumentation to what part or something like that. All suggestions are good.
Thanx

Examine the underlying chord/harmony structure. Decide if you want sustained harmonies (the sound will be very organ like) or moving, rhythmic harmonies. Decide who has the melody at any given moment and see if you might want to move it from person to person.
Check for copyright issues and get permission if need be.

Unless you have an Eb player who plays beautifully in tune I might suggest you use 3 Bbs and bass. Also, do you have an alto player? While it adds a different tone quality I myself don't know very many alto clarinetists these days. Do you have the players in mind for this project? Having done some arranging when I know my musicians' abilities it makes the arranging much easier.
Good luck...this is a lovely piece.

Thanks for the suggestions, Dee and C Mama. I do not really have anyone in mind, though I know of some people who could. The only issue is that the certain group of people are pro's. Im greatful to be able to play in the group, (its a college band/community band). Should I pay them or something. I kind of feel a intimidating feeling about asking, hehe he. If anyone knows the parts for choir, it would help me there some, giving me an idea. Could I use; an alto cl. and a Bb clar. for the begining as the solo parts. then maybe, i could use a bass clar. and two or three more Bb clar. Examining it more closely, its a solo for two instruments; a euphonium and a trumpet....for this could i use a Bb and an alto? The rest consist of accompanyment, carrying the melody throughout. Would that work??Does anyone actually know if something like this already exhisits? Well, I havent actually attempted it, practicing it more for contest, but I want to start off with some great ideas. Thanx for the recent though, gets me started with something. Anymore greatly welcomed!!
