What is the best version of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto K. 622 to get for a solo clarinet player. I've seen it in A major and B flat.

The concerto was written for Basset A clarinet originally so I would recommend getting the A clarinet version, since it tends to be the closets to what Mozart had intended.
As far as editions go for Mozart there are several out there to choose from but I am very partial to the Barenreiter (1977) edition which is has both the reconstructed basset clarinet part and the A clarinet part. Also the piano accompaniment seems to be a little bit closer to the orchestral accompaniment thus I think it gives the overall fuller performance.

I suspect this player is on a Bb clarinet, so take it easy and buy the A version for the regular clarinet....as to all that Bassett stuff that is for those who of course have an extesion........................sounds very ominous doesn't it?

This may sound like a dumb question but, can the A version by Hacker /Schott be played as is on a Bb clarinet or do some notes go to the bottom of the A clarinet range, and therefore out of range for the Bb and have to be transposed? Please don't frag me for this, because it is only a question (as dumb as it may sound) and not a recomendation.

The clarinetist plays in C Major regardless of which instrument he's using. Only difference is that piano reduction will be in either A Major or B-Flat Major depending on the choice of clarinet.
However, to play on a B-Flat clarinet and to make it sound like it's in A (in other words playing the B Major), you'd need a clarinet with a E-Flat lever.

I'm an "A Clarinet-Breitkopf Edition" person myself; but a personal goal of mine is to perform the solo someday on A Basset Clarinet with an orchestra accompaniment. v/r
