Does anyone else out there play on a Bay synthetic barrel? I bought on a little over 5 years ago after playing one that belonged to a friend, at which point I fell in love with it. To be honest, I've not seen many more clarinetists on the professional level use them that much. Another collegue told me that they detested Bay's barrels and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. But, that only makes two oppinions other than mine.
I'm just curious to see if anyone else has had the same experience with a Bay barrel and uses it exclusively as I do. Also, anyone ever compared them to Pyne's barrels (any style)?

I use a synthetic Bay barrel on my A clarinet, which I bought from Charles Bay. He gave me a variety of barrels to try out and this barrel worked the best for tone quality, projection, and intonation. It isn't shaped like a regular barrel....it is pinched in the middle....and this brings out lots of comments from other players. They all quiet down when I explain that this is the one that works the best in all respects.

I also have a Bay "pinched" barrel but have choosen to use my Springer barrels instead. I lent the Bay to other menbers of our local municipal band as well as my college in the orchestra where I play, and none of them like it either. A couple prefer the AccuBore barrels, but most just play their original wood ones. I hought that the Bay barrel deadened my sound too much--however, that is just my opinion.
The bottom line--and what is most important--is how any piece of equipement works for you. If you like it, use it. Otherwise, you might follow the example of a "legendary" Chicago clarinetist who would finish an orchestral solo by tossing his clarinet into nearby Lake Michigan (as told to me by my old college clarinet professor--who, it was rumored, practiced scuba diving as a hobby)
