 Hymns for clarinet ensemble
Author: Diana

The ensemble I play with consists of seven people: four Bb soprano clarinets, one eefer, one alto, and one bass.
We have a possible opportunity to play for a church service. We have a number of pieces that are suitable as incidental music, but we'd like to have some hymns.
Does anyone know of a collection of well-known hymns arranged for clarinet ensemble? I tried searching the archives and some of the online sheet music purveyors but didn't come up with anything useful.
As a second course of action if I can't find any published arrangements, would it be feasible to take a piano or organ piece and transcribe/transpose each line as a separate part?

During my usual cyber stroll though eBay's clarinet listings this morning, I noticed a long string of sheet music posts. Among them;
Ave Maria
Spirituals
Jewish Melodies
Inspirational
Christian Hymn Book
Battle Hymn - duet
Whole World in His Hands - trio
I didn't check out the "other listings" by the seller(s) but I imagine you could find lots of useful sheet music there.
The group I play with reads photocopies from out standard hymn book. We keep it simple to attract players of all skill levels. However, if you're ambitious and have some fairly consistent reed players, you could write some of your own arrangements for them. I'm not particularly ambitious but have quasi-arranged several quartet pieces which I plan to introduce to the clarinetists next time we get together.
Have you checked with your nearest music store? Last time I visited one of the bigger stores here they had quite a few string ensemble arrangements of hymns that I'm sure could be readily adapted to woodwinds.

Diana,
Perhaps the site below, which claims to have 1000 hymns available, will have something useful.

http://www.iddincusa.com/idd/SoftContent/viewdocm.aspx?id=223

(or enter www.midisoft.com on the address line and it should take you there)

Best wishes,
Hans

Diana: Your second option is usually a good one, and very easy to do. Most hymnals (that I've seen) are perfectly constructed for SATB. Just think Bb 1, Bb 2, Alto clarinet, and Bass Clarinet and the job is done. Give you an example that worked very well: when I was in the Navy we used to provide a small group for church services on board ship. We frequently used two Bb trumpets for S and A, trombone for T, and Baritone sax for the B line. I did the Bari sax part just by changing the key signature and reading it as if it were in the treble clef, the trombone read his normal clef, and the trumpets did the usual Bb transpostion. Chuck
