I would think that the 40 or so who auditioned were the only ones who were invited to it based on their resume/application. They probably got several hundred applications.

My old college band director often described (jokingly, of course) the oboe as, "the ill wind that nobody blows good".
But we clarinetis all know that it's really the almost always out of tune piccolo :>)

Pictures the Lenoir High School Band, Lenoir, North Carolina
and the Bands Officers for 1959 pictured standing on the main entrance steps to the Band Building off Harper Ave.
Standing as a senior, the Quarterback of the Lenoir Band and future Quarterback for Atlanta and New York, Dr. Joe Robinson.

What you don't see in the pic well is that the upper joint side pads were completely covered in saran wrap and tape. I was amazed that this guys clarinet even played!

The problem with oboe as QB is that on the one yard line he'd be more concerned with his reed than the play.
