 B-stock??
Author: CPW

I recently noticed that music123.com and some other online companies are selling instruments listed as B-stock. Some say used B stock, others are new.
What does this mean?

Hi,

Usually, B stock is something that may have gone out to a customer and then was returned for some reason. The item can't be sold as new so B stock seems to fit. Sometimes, an item was defective and then repaired to meet factory specs.

Compters are resold as refurbrished (I have purchased several with excellent results).

Usually, the full warranty applies and you would have to look closely to even know that the items was not brand new (and many times, it might just be an overstock or over order).

I recently phoned wwbw.com to ask about this (they share the same web ordering system with music123.com). For what it's worth, the rep said that these instruments are trade show or display demos, and that they have minor scratches or other insignificant damage. He also said that they are all sent back to the manufacturer to be brought up to "new" spec, that they carry full manufacturer warranty, and they are not factory seconds.

When I pressed on on whether any were customer returns, he insisted they were not. Perhaps it doesn't matter whether the instrument was handled in a showroom or someone's home, but this answer does lead one to wonder what happens to customer returns.

My guess is that B Stock actually includes any instrument that has evident wear which precludes its being sold as new. What salesman would admit that he is selling you some else's reject?

It's an old term used everywhere in merchandising and simply means it is not "A" stock which is new in box never opened. So....it can mean just about anything which, if you are smart, means you should ask the seller what he means.

Looking through the WW/BW web site it seems that there are different degrees of instruments which are not technically brand new.

These are the actual definitions which WW/BW provides to distinguish the differences between their own: "New B Stock", "Used B Quality", "New C Stock", "Not Factory Sealed" and "Used Mint":

New B Stock: "Noticable scratches, dents and/ or nicks. Typically a customer return or refurbished product. GUARANTEED TO PLAY PERFECTLY. Includes FULL MANUFACTURER WARRANTY and Woodwind and Brasswind's 45 day 100% satisfaction guarantee. Our loss is your opportunity to SAVE MONEY!"

Used B Quality: "Noticable scratches, dents and/ or finish wear typical of normal use. GUARANTEED TO PLAY PERFECTLY. Because we have so many instruments, it is not possible for us to describe each one individually, but you can TRY RISK FREE because this item includes Woodwind and Brasswind's 45 DAY 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE"

New C Stock: "Shows signs of heavy use with extensive scratches, dents, and finish wear. May have been damaged and repaired. Think of it as a "used" item that is still protected by a FULL MANUFACTURER WARRANTY. This item is GUARANTEED TO PLAY, and includes Woodwind and Brasswind's 45 day 100% satisfaction guarantee. Our loss is your opportunity to SAVE MONEY!"

Not Factory Sealed: "LIKE NEW. Original factory seal is not intact, but the product is in PERFECT CONDITION. Everything is "like new" except the packaging and the price! All "NFS" items have a MANUFACTURER WARRANTY and Woodwind and Brasswind's 45 day, 100% satisfaction guarantee"

Used Mint: "MINT, MINT, MINT. Technically used, but still in PERFECT CONDITION. Everything is "LIKE NEW" except the price. Includes Woodwind and Brasswind's 45 day 100% satisfaction guarantee."

It seems that the salesman mentioned in the previous posting was not as forthcoming as the information contained on their own web site...GBK

Never having looked at that series of definitions on the WW/BW website, I am indebted to GBK for providing the best laugh of the day.

"New B Stock" is "GUARANTEED TO PLAY PERFECTLY,"

"Used B Quality" is "GUARANTEED TO PLAY PERFECTLY,"

"New C Stock" is (oops) "GUARANTEED TO PLAY."

Thanks and regards, Glenn,
John
