I was wondering... in regards to Mahlers 2nd Symphony, is the 1st Eb part regarded as a better part than the principal clarinet part? I'm yet to see a score, but I heard at some point that the Eb part is more fun and harder? I'm not sure what is true. What do you think?

I'd say with the fun and excitement of the third movement, I would enjoy the E Flat part. However, on many occasions the first movement is played independently (like my youth symphony is doing). And I am playing the E flat part, which with its about 30 measures total pales in comparision to the first clarinet in B Flat. So, for the whole symphony, tough choice, but, i think that third movement is really worth it.

I think that the 1st part is better, at least there is more of it. The Eb part has less playing but is almost all solos. One drawback to the Eb part- the exposed, pp high notes that are impossible to tune in the finale.
