I'm using a chromatic tuner to check intonation on a Bb clarinet. When I play a "c", the tuner registers "Bb." Why doesn't the tuner perceive the note as a "C" ?

If your chromatic tuner is like mine, (Seiko ST757) you have to set it to the key of Bb for the C on your clarinet to register a C on the tuner. It probably comes set to the key of C for instruments like pianos.

If you play in a band or orchestra (or will in the future,) you'll tune to "concert key" (C) anyway, and its good to get used to that. If the group tunes to A, we play B flat, If they tune to B flat, we play C.

(sometimes, I play B, C, F#, and even an occassional A--but only play a Bb when I want to aggrivate the principal oboist or go home early from rehearsal)
