I have been given an old wooden clarinet that is in remarkably good condition, marked Carl Fischer Artist Model on the barrel, top piece and bell. It is further stamped Italy on all pieces. I know that the C. Fischer Co. commisioned these instruments from a variety of producers but have so far found no reference to the Italian origin. Instrument was purchased well used in the early '50s in a NYC pawn shop.

Regardless of who made it, if Carl put his name on it it's probably a decent instrument. Many of C. Fischer's re-sold instruments were student quality but I don't know that he sold any 'bad' horns. The Carl Fischer instruments I've handled seem okay.
Are you trying to find out the actual maker?

Right, D S, I'd pick Orsi. However, Penzel-Mueller marketed an Artist model [17/6] and may have had it trademarked, in that time period!! Don

Don,
Penzel-Mueller would not have stamped it Italy though.

Greetings, Mark (fellow 2nd clar. in our community concert band)!
May you also get hooked on this BB, where I've learned a great deal--and gotten some laughs too.
Although I know nothing about CF clarinets beyond what's been said here (and on other threads), I suspect you might have a good player, esp. if you try other mouthpieces as an alternative to your present Selmer HS* (which came with the horn?). Though there may be some who love them, I personally find these quite close-tip mouthpieces among the most difficult to get a decent sound from and to play in general.
