Here's something for you people on this BBoard who would like to purchase an insulated clarinet case, but cannot afford it.
You know those regular shoulder bags, the big ones with several pockets (including two really big ones), that sell for something like $15 at Wal-Mart?
Lo and behold, most single clarinet cases fit into it very easily, with another large pocket to store music, and a couple of smaller ones to store smaller clarinet items, plus pencils, keys, and wallets.
Get some padding and stick it on the sides if you want insulation. (necessary in the Northern US, Canada, and some other parts of the world)
Just a neat tip!

I have a bag like the ones you describe, and my teacher and two friends purchased the same upon my urging. We all love them. Even though they're originally meant for travel or computers, they work just as well for the clarinetist who doesn't have the 30-100 dollars for a "gig bag". Tips like these sure do help clarinet players, especially students that don't like carrying music and instruments separately.

Back packs work just fine. My Eastpak carries all: clarinet case, sheet music, discman + CDs, mini-umbrella, magazines, my shirt & tie (when I leave my office into outdoor heat), books, some fruit: it all fits. And, important too here in the Netherlands: itīs waterproof.
It is also very useful in non-clarinet situations.
I would think that many people, especially students, already own a back pack (to take books etc. to high school)? There really is no need to buy things especially for clarinet use, when you already have something that does the trick just as easily.

I was going to spend about 100 bucks on an Altiere case bag but my insticts were against me. This weekend I went and spent I think it was about 50 bucks on a really nice Eddie Bauer flight bag. It has three pockets; one for the clarinet, one for music and one that's a little smaller for the extras, my extra reeds, mouthpieces, spare ligature and all that. It's kinda big but everything fits in that one bag, with room to spare!

I use a Nike Bag and it seems to hold all my needs. I put my clarinet in there (even though I bought a nice Pro-Tec Case and the shoulder strap broke, so I have to use the bag).

I have a propac for my marching clarinet but I kind of want to keep my new Buffet Festival in it's original case because the case is fitted for it and I don't want anything to jeporadize the way my new clarinet plays!
