Hi, I bought this clarinet about 2 years ago, and used to frequent this site regularly but my other musical committments are taking off and I have no time to play, and it is sitting here looking rather lonely. I would love to know a little more about it and what level of player would perhaps appreciate it, where I should try sell it and an idea of a price (all impossible questions, but you never know). Plays great to my ears.
The stamp includes a Lyre at the top, D.Noblet at the top within the stamp and Paris at the bottom within the stamp. Below the stamp is a D and an N on top of one another. At the one end of each piece, "Made in France" is stamped. The serial Number is 23xx (not sure why everyone puts the x's but there must be a good reason, so I have as well).
Any ideas, I was planning on taking it to Howarths in London or somewhere but I thought perhaps someone here may know a little (or a lot) about it.

Thanks Mark for that info. The difference with mine is that it is a wooden model, this will probably have some sort of impact on whether it is considered a good or bad model. Many thanks for that.

How old is yours? Or do you know? You could always list it on the classifieds here on Sneezy, or you could list it on eBay. You would do better than a dealer would give you for it, but you should have a way to post a photo of the instrument. People really want to see what they're getting.

Not positive on how old it is, I suspect from reading the article pointed by Mark, it should be around the 1940's. I wouldn't know what to ask for it from a collectors point of view. It is in very good condition.
I was going to post a message on the classifieds here, but with so little knowledge of the origens of the instrument, my explanation and asking price will not accurate.

it sounds like a cousin of my junior high school clarinet, which had the markings you mention and a serial number of 8XXX. Mine was made in 1957 and imported by Leblanc; it cost $189.50 brand spanking new and I've seen tons of them on Ebay over the years, usually priced in the $25-75 range. The hierarchy in those days was: Leblanc--professional grade; Noblet--student/advanced; Normandy--plastic beginners' horn. Not sure if yours is the same model as mine or not, but one tipoff is the right hand side trill keys: The dorsal (outside) edges of the keys are dead straight from key touch to pad cup, as opposed to wavy (Selmer/Buffet etc.) or "Jumpy" (some Leblancs).
I keep mine on hand as an emergency backup and/or outdoor instrument, but the sound's a little small. it does the job, though.
