 Buffet C12=key of C or B flat?
Author: Guido
Date:   2003-01-19 04:39

Searching the bb site's archives left me uncertain if Buffet's older C12's are in the key of C, or if they're just a middle grade quality grendilla between the 11 and 13 but that they're B flat.

It also seemed like someone has seen a recent brochure indicating a C12 which was ebonite and in C.

Thanks in advance.

Guido....
The C12 was made in Bb only.
I own one : the workmanship is equal to an R13, the sound and intonation are superb . Mine is from 1984, first yr production. It was offered in Nickel plate only and all the body joints are stamped C12 beneath the Buffet logo.

I'll share with you some information on the C12 that I received from a retired Buffet Regional Sales Rep.
The Buffet C-12 clarinet was produced only a few years, and was priced at $895 in 1984, and $1,820 by 1992. So, as you may realize, the C12 pricing was, for eachrespective yr,only $300 less than the R13.

It is a very good instrument, positioned between the professional R-13 and the near-professional E-13. It is a French clarinet (E-ll's and below are mass-produced in Germany) with similar wood to the R-13. The E-13 is a VERY close relative to the R-13, so the C-12, being between them, should be an excellent instrument. The original case is an R-13 case. The Rep further mentioned that it was also significantly better than the old Master Model.

I've come across another here in my town and although nice, it was not the equal of mine, so I passed (like people, clarinets are individuals).. Mine, I've since given away as a gift to a friend along with an early 60's Selmer Eb. (it wasn't 'bad', it's simply that among 3 clarinets I offered her..including an R13.....that's the one she selected).
Also, as you may know, the LJ keywork is like the MM, ESMM in that the RH sliver key is straight as oppossed to the 'S' configuration. And, the RH 'pinky' key cluster is set about 1/8 "higher than the R13, thus eliminating the wood cutout beneath the cluster.
Hope I answered your question and perhaps any other you may have regarding the C12.

regards
dennis

Thank you Dennis.

Yes, your explanation was thorough and very helpful. The complexity of the buffet instruments over years is a bit baffling. Thank you for taking time to clarify.

What a great bulletin board. Great to read the archives, thanks to all.

With the risk of not being read, I might add that the C of the C12 stands for conservatory. Buffet intended this model to suit near-professional-level-high-grade-students from conservatories to find a pro horn at a lesser cost than RC/R13 pro models.
