 Getting Shepherd on the Rock
Author: Sophie

Hello.

I'm trying to get hold of the de Peyer, Sills and Wadsworth recording of Schuberts Shepherd on the Rock. I've been searching the internet but haven't found anything yet about which company it was recorded with or how I could get hold of a copy.

Thanks if anyone can help!

Sophie.

Since Sills and DePeyer both recorded for (EMI) Angel, that is probably the label. Sorry, I don't know the record number. This was originally an LP. It may have been released on CD (probably was) at some point but I don't know this for a fact. A quick search at Amazon and hbdirect did not turn it up. My guess is that it's out of print. If you have been searching for "Shepherd on the Rock" you might try searching again for "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" ("hirt felsen" without the quotes should do the trick). Sorry I can't tell you more but perhaps it's a start.

Best regards,
jnk

The only DePeyer performance of "Der Hirt aif dem Felsen" which is still in print is the version with Christa Ludwig:

If you have Windows Media, you can listen to the first minute of the track. It is on Disc 3 ...GBK

The Sills/de Peyer Shepherd on the Rock was released on LP on a Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society label. I'm sure it was re-released on CD, though it's probably out of print. See http://www.gervasedepeyer.com/historiccont.htm

While Sills was a little past her prime, it's one of the great recordings of Shepherd. She's is the only one to manage the long phrase near the end of the first section without pausing for a breath, and her voice is perfectly suited to the music.

In comparison with the famous recording with Benita Valente and Harold Wright, Valente's vocal production is too heavy and operatic for my taste.

My other favorites are Elisabeth Schumann/Kell and the several versions made by Elly Ameling.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
